1. What FLAGYL Is and What It Is Used For

FLAGYL contains metronidazole.

Metronidazole works by killing certain bacteria and parasites that cause infections in the body.

FLAGYL can be used to:

2. What You Need to Know Before You Take or Give FLAGYL to Your Child

Do not take or give FLAGYL in the following situations:

Warnings and Precautions

Special care is needed with FLAGYL in the following situations:

Liver Warning in Cockayne Syndrome

Patients with Cockayne syndrome require careful monitoring of liver function during and after treatment.

Stop taking FLAGYL and tell a doctor immediately if any of the following occur:

Possible liver warning signs
Stomach pain
Loss of appetite
Nausea
Vomiting
Fever
Feeling unwell
Fatigue
Yellowing of the skin or eyes
Dark urine
Pale stools
Itching

Serious Skin Reactions

Serious skin reactions have been reported with FLAGYL. These include:

Serious skin reaction
Stevens-Johnson syndrome
Toxic epidermal necrolysis
Acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis

Seek medical help immediately and stop using FLAGYL if serious skin symptoms occur.

Possible warning signs may include:

Warning signs
Reddish target-like spots
Circular patches with central blisters
Ulcers of the mouth, throat, nose, genitals or eyes
Red and swollen eyes
Fever or flu-like symptoms
Skin peeling
Widespread red, scaly rash
Bumps under the skin
Blisters with fever

The highest risk of serious skin reactions is usually within the first week of treatment, often within the first 48 hours.


Mental Health Effects

Some people using metronidazole may experience mental health symptoms.

These may include:

Possible mental health symptoms
Irrational thoughts
Hallucinations
Confusion
Depression
Thoughts of self-harm
Suicidal thoughts

These symptoms can occur even in people who have not had similar problems before.

If these symptoms are noticed, stop taking FLAGYL and seek medical advice immediately.


Alcohol Warning

Do not drink alcoholic beverages or take medicines containing alcohol during treatment with FLAGYL and for at least 1 to 3 days after finishing treatment.

Alcohol may cause unpleasant reactions during this period.


Pseudomembranous Colitis

Pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with FLAGYL.

Tell a doctor immediately if watery and severe diarrhoea occurs. The diarrhoea may also be bloody.


Other Medicines and FLAGYL

Always tell a healthcare provider if you or your child are taking any other medicine, including complementary or traditional medicines.

Tell the doctor especially if any of the following are being used:

Interferences With Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests

Metronidazole may interfere with some blood tests, including tests for liver function, cholesterol and glucose.

Tell the doctor that FLAGYL is being taken if blood tests are required.


FLAGYL With Food, Drink and Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol or take medicines containing alcohol while taking FLAGYL and for 1 to 3 days after completing the course.

Alcohol during FLAGYL treatment may cause:

Very fast or uneven heartbeat
Palpitations
Headache

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established.

If pregnant, breastfeeding, possibly pregnant or planning to have a baby, consult a doctor, pharmacist or other healthcare provider before taking FLAGYL.


Driving and Using Machines

FLAGYL may cause side effects that can affect driving or machine use.

Do not drive, use machinery or operate tools if any of the following occur:

Fits or convulsions
Temporary eyesight problems
Blurred vision
Double vision

FLAGYL Contains Sucrose and Preservatives

FLAGYL contains sucrose, methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate and alcohol.

3. How to Take or Give FLAGYL

Always take or give FLAGYL exactly as instructed by the doctor. It is important to complete the full course of treatment.

The length of treatment will depend on the illness being treated and individual needs.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist if unsure.

Tell a doctor or pharmacist if the effect of FLAGYL seems too strong or too weak.

5. How to Store FLAGYL

Store all medicines out of reach of children.

Store at or below 25 °C.

Store in the original container to protect from light.

Do not use FLAGYL after the expiry date shown on the packaging.

Return unused medicine to a pharmacist.

Do not dispose of unused medicine in drains or sewerage systems, including toilets.
